Matisse Styled Paper Art

On this project, our goal was to recreate a famous painting in the style of Henri Matisse. Matisse's style was very simplified, often used by cutting out painted pieces of canvas. In class we started by picking our famous painting. I picked 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' by Georges Seurat because I remember seeing the original painting in Chicago. I thought it would be fun to simplify this complex painting into basic blocks of colors. After picking our painting we chose our construction paper that would be the background of our painting. This would be where we glued our pieces of paper to. My greatest strength is that my version does look like the original but styled after Matisse. My greatest challenge was cutting the appropriate sized pieces of paper and making it to scale. The monkey tail was the hardest part. If I were to extend this project I would make it so that more of the people could be in the painting and to add more shading, such as the highlights of the grass in the park.
